Discover the Advantage of Improved Breathing in Your Riding Abilities

Easy-to-do Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® breathing lessons — created especially to enhance your riding.

While the focus here is on breathing, remember that in the Feldenkrais Method®, breath is not an isolated function.

How we breathe reflects how we move, how we feel, and even how we think. The diaphragm, ribs, spine, chest, and pelvis are part of one finely tuned system — when one part works in harmony, the whole self responds.

Feldenkrais called breathing the bridge between body and mind—when your breath flows freely, posture aligns without effort, movement becomes fluid, and emotions calm.  On horseback, that freedom deepens your connection with your horse, creating harmony that they feel the moment you start walking.

Get Ready for a WOW feeling! Are you really riding at your best? You might be holding yourself back—and not even know it.

Ride with effortless posture—reset your breathing system to sit taller, lighter, and more balanced.

Unlock a softer, more effective seat—free your hips and pelvis for fluid, connected movement. Gain a seat that follows naturally.

Refine your aids instantly—clearer signals, softer hands, and better communication with your horse.

Eliminate hidden tension—stop bracing, release stiffness, and move with natural ease.

Boost focus and calm—regulate nerves and stay centered, even under show pressure.  Tapp into a calm, centered state that supports peak performance.

Gain lasting results—gentle Feldenkrais® lessons create improvements that feel natural and automatic, working for you in the background.

When one part is stuck, your seat stiffens, your hips can’t follow, and your hands lose their softness. Potentially a missing link for you?

Meet Debra

It was a hot one; jackets were waived. In the middle of what could have been a well-scored extended trot, Debra felt it again. The seconds stretched painfully long as she held her breath. Her seat stiffened, causing her ride horse to lose balance and rhythm — the effect lasted longer than she expected, making her ride horse appear to be lame of at least “rein-lame.”

She couldn’t help but feel embarrassed — struggling in public with something she knew she was the cause of, despite working with a personal trainer, physiotherapist, and Pilates trainer. Her seat and fitness issues had been plaguing her. Merely going to a show meant that she previously needed to shorten her stirrups from her home length, an obvious sign of tension. That day was no different: her legs lifted awkwardly, tension gripped her hips, she was out of breath, and by the walk she was basically panting just to catch her breath. Something had to change.

That same week, Debra contacted Dave Thind, for an online consult. During the session, many of her tension patterns were addressed, and she discovered the true source of her struggle: her breathing patterns.

After the consult, Dave prescribed some homework: A Late Summer Breeze. Debra reports:

“I never realized how much my breathing was limiting my seat and balance. After just a few lessons, my posture feels lighter, my aids are clearer, and I’m riding with a calm confidence I haven’t felt in years. My legs no longer grip and climb upwards, riding with my home stirrup length is now possible. My horse seems more relaxed and responsive! He instantly felt more relaxed and connected and no longer rein-lame, of course. Also, my right S.I. pain has disappeared, thank you! And I'm no longer tired after third and fourth level trot work, even for longer periods. It is like we are finally breathing together.”

Your physical challenges are real. And those affect emotions like anxiety.

"The emotion can not exist without the coinciding posture."

These issues aren’t just perplexing — they’re agonizing.

Sadly, these struggles don’t just go away — often they intensify, stealing away the pleasure of your ride, and disrupting the harmonious connection with your horse.

And those dreams. Pouring your heart, soul (and let's not forget, substantial finances) into your riding passion, only to feel like time and aging are eroding the joy and comfort it once brought.  Self-doubt begins, the feeling that dreams are slipping through your fingers. It’s a gut-wrenching feeling, isn't it?

But what if YOU could change that narrative?

For every stage of your dressage journey, from "this is tricky" to "this is awesome" - DTM Awareness Through Movement lessons are there to guide you, to make the process easier, more enjoyable and just plain better.

It’s possible for your movements to flow effortlessly, a super seat, totally in sync with your horse. Your body will feel:

✔ Capable

✔ Strong

✔ Natural

✔ Gracefully

✔ Able to absorb the concussive forces of each stride

You're not just reaching your performance goals — you're exceeding them.

A beautiful message from Melanie Thomson in Canada:

"So hold your head high, you are not too old, too fat, too thin, you have every right to be right where you are doing what you love. It shouldn’t matter what your name is, it should matter about the content of your character and about the way we put our horses first and I hope we get to a future that it is those things we get judged on. Ride On we are the lucky ones" Thank you Melanie!

- Debra B, AA Rider, FL

I have always worked on my position, and always will. Like all riders, I've had periods where every horse felt great, and sometimes, not so great. Directly after doing this course: My hips swing freely, my seat is stable yet supple, and I feel connected to my horses like never before. These simple breathing exercises made such a huge difference. Overall, my posture feels taller and freer, and all my aids have more finesse and nuances, including my hands which I would not think would change through these breath lessons. Truly eye-opening."

- Stacy B, USDF Gold Medalist, Trainer, KY

I always struggled to sit the trot on my big-moving horse. Resetting my breathing made it effortless—my hips suddenly moved with him instead of against him. And the best part, I don't have to think about anything specific when I ride, the "reset works"! Gone are the days of me exhausting myself from  trying harder and harder. Less truly is more. My horse’s response was immediate, and my trainer was amazed and asked what I had changed, I think she will be doing your course too. Thank you Dave!

"I had an injury and began to brace without realizing it — pulling from one side, stiffening in the saddle. These breathing lessons helped me reconnect with freedom in my seat and spine. Now, my posture is like before without effort. My influence and aids are subtle, better than before, and my confidence is back. Highly recommend!

Somehow with the injury and new seat problems I developed anxiety about performance.

At first I was also surprised, but many things had happened, and after all, I am also only human.

Also with the seat problems, the anxiety was never so that others could see it, but I felt it, and so did my horses. The tension came in the way of my focus and changed my feeling. I was always thinking, if only it could be again like it was before. When I told you this “secret,” you said, this is the right course for me. You were right! I am very satisfied, also surprised, and happy.

I still do the lessons at home, and before the shows—small or big—I make sure to do also the exercises from your other course. Now I always feel calm, centred, and effective, just how I knew it can be. It feels good, for me and also with the horses, and also the competition remarks agree.

I hear some riders use sport-psychologists or hypnotherapy for this, but for me, both did not work.

Thank you for your help in Warendorf, and also your easy home exercises with recordings, timely email correspondence, and private sessions online. So glad you were introduced to me—zum Glück! Now I feel very ready for the championship, and for much more. Danke, Dave!"

Treatment of patients to manage panic attacks and also helpful with insomnia.

Enjoyed the course. I found some interesting uses of the breathing techniques in my psychology practice. I am a Ph.D. Licensed clinical psychologist and treat patients with anxiety, pain management issues and PTSD ( as well as depression and relationship issues). I have also been trained in clinical hypnosis. I have been able to incorporate some of the breathing exercises in my treatment of patients to manage panic attacks and also helpful with insomnia. So not only has my horse benefitted but my patients as well. Thanks again.

Christoph Hess on Horse Welfare Using DTM

German Master Christoph Hess, who is retired from his long-held position as Head of Education and Training at the German Equestrian Federation F.N., says of training horses,

“The most important part of the training of a horse is the training of the rider's position. No rider is able to train a horse properly when they have not trained their seat. The rider has to learn to find the right position in the saddle; balanced and relaxed - and to be honest this is very difficult.”

“Dave is an expert on schooling riders. He is brilliant in teaching the correct rider’s position in a friendly and positive way and his students have good positions in the saddle - he himself also! I suggest that many of us should use the opportunity to train with Dave. Dave‘s training will make you happy and especially your horses happy. A smooth sitting rider who is swinging into the horses’ movements is a horseman/horsewoman. This is important for the welfare of the horse. The better the rider’s position the happier the horse - and Dave helps his clients achieve good positions,” continued Hess who is a current F.N. Educational Ambassador.

Meet Dave: Your Trusted Instructor on the Path to Masterful Riding

Dave, a lifelong equestrian, German Equestrian Federation Certified "Trainer A" (Level III, one level higher that Bereiter) and an expert in the Feldenkrais Method®, knows firsthand the struggles dressage riders face.

From major injuries to frustrating stiffness, he's experienced it all and emerged stronger, thanks to his application of the Feldenkrais Method®. Passionate about teaching classical riding, Dave is also a life long learner - Dave has been lucky enough to train with some of the best, including: Martin Plewa (Former National Team Trainer, Germany), Rainer Jackel (Westphalian Riding School), Johan Zagers (Germany, Brazilian Olympic Team Trainer), Hartwig Burfeind (3x German National Professional Champion), Arthur-Kottas (Spanish Riding School), Robert Dover (Several time Olympian and Former National Team Trainer, USA), Charlotte Bredahl (Olympian, USA),  Juan Manuel Vidal (Spain), Juan Matute (Olympian, Spain), Christoph Hess (Germany) Monica Theodorescu (German Olympian and National Team Trainer) and now Rien Van Der Schaft (Spanish Team Trainer).

He has also received training from many other top trainers, to whom he is grateful for having shared their knowledge.

He has also spent countless hours in the traditional role of a trainer educating horses and  riders, however, his unique skill set includes expertise in the Feldenkrais Method.

To help even more people than tradition 1 on 1, Dave has tested dressage specific Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® lessons and correctly sequenced groups of lessons (courses) that are proven to deliver. Results are within the global theme of the course and much  more, sometimes unexpected results!

"Everyone is unique in their patterns, but humans all share common movement blueprints so regardless of where the starting point, doing mat work movement lessons based on evolution and childhood development that also incorporate the science of biomechanics are extremely effective." These movement lessons are done out of the saddle, from the comfort of home. "Improvements are made not only to biomechanics, pain- relief and excelling in performance, but riders experience more creativity, spontaneous reactions and adaptability to change, as well as more confidence. Seeing so many smiling and amazed riders in person, I knew I had to bring this to the whole equestrian community! Hence the DTM online courses for riders to enjoy from home."

Dave believes that opposed to attempting to make improvement while in the saddle,  with DTM unmounted, we can stop our habits, disable being on auto-pilot, learn to "feel" more, learn better flow and timing, have options and reboot/recalibrate. Therefore faster, and more permanent, "rewiring" and results.

With 30 years in the horse world, Dave understands your challenges and dreams like no one else.

His passion? Sharing this transformative method with riders across the globe.  For two decades, Dave has continued to be excited and amazed with the Feldenkrais Method and how riders can experience nothing short of miraculous, effective and quick  improvements.

Whether you're battling discomfort, aiming for the next level of performance, or you just want to  work on your seat through a replacement to longe lessons, he's dedicated to helping you achieve your dressage goals and transform your riding experience.

The only disappointment will be the you should have done this course sooner!

Breath as a Bridge Between Body And Mind

Feldenkrais saw breath as the bridge between body and mind. When the breath is free, posture becomes effortless, movement becomes fluid, and emotions settle into balance. In riding, this harmony translates into a deeper connection with your horse — one they can feel instantly.

Our breath is the bridge. Let’s cross it — for your riding, your well-being, and your horse.
